The Selected picture box on the portal chooses one of the following at random when displaying the page. Follow the instructions below for adding or nominating a new picture to the list.

Football related Featured pictures from Wikipedia or Commons can be added directly to this list without nomination. All other images should be nominated first to ensure that we only display our best work on the portal. The procedure for nomination is at the bottom of this page.

Note that the prefix Image: is not required when using this template, also - the template will auto-wikilink the article entered in the link= field. Further information on this template can be found at Portal:English football/Selected picture/Layout.

[edit] To add a new article

  1. Click on the next successive empty entry or red link from this page.
  2. Paste the above layout template if it isn't already there.
  3. Add a free image and caption.
  4. Add the credit line for the author with a wikilink or external link to their profile if possible.
  5. Write two or three sentences in the text field using information about the picture and it's subject, you may find it useful to examine the existing entries for an idea of the length required.
  6. Ensure the main subject of the image is in bold and add this same article to the link field.
  7. Preview the page.
  8. Save the page.
  9. Go to the main Portal:English football page.
  10. Click on edit page.
  11. Update "max=" to its new total for the {{Random portal component}} on the main page. The line which is edited is this one: {{Random portal component|max=4|header=Selected picture|subpage=Selected picture}} Make sure that "max=" is the same numerical value as the image entry added above (i.e. if you added image 43, then max=43)

Robbie Keane of Tottenham Hotspur places the ball for a Penalty kick. A player for the Republic of Ireland, Keane scored his 100th competitive goal for Tottenham in the 2-0 win against Sunderland on January 19, 2008. He is the 15th Tottenham player to achieve this feat.

The Sheffield F.C. team in 1857. Sheffield F.C. are regarded as the oldest football club in the world and were awarded the FIFA Order of Merit in 2004 to reflect this. The amateur team played Inter Milan in 2007 to celebrate their 150th anniversary at Bramall Lane with Pele as the guest of honour.

The opening ceremony for the 2006 FA Cup Final between Liverpool and West Ham. This was the 125th time the trophy was contested and the last time the final was held in the Millennium Stadium before returning to Wembley for 2007. The score was 3-3 after extra time and the game was ended with a penalty shootout in which Liverpool won the cup for the seventh time in their history.

England playing Estonia in a UEFA Euro 2008 qualifying round Group E match. The match took place in the Wembley Stadium in England. England dominated the game and came away with a 3-0 victory with goals from Shaun Wright-Phillips and Wayne Rooney and an own-goal from Taavi Rähn. The victory left England second, five points clear of Russia.

Flowers and tributes left at in memoriam of Cameroon international Marc-Vivien Foé at Maine Road, home of his former club Manchester City. Foé collapsed in the 71st minute of the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup semifinal between Cameroon and Columbia and later died. Many of his former clubs created memorials in his honour, with Manchester City retiring the number 23 shirt.

Charlton Athletic were founded in 1905, the same year as Chelsea, and first played in the Siemens Meadow, so named because of the overshadowing Siemens telecoms mast. They played here until 1907 and moved on to three other stadia before World War I.

Griffin Park is the football ground of League Two side Brentford. It is the only English league football ground to have a pub on each corner. The ground gets its name from the Griffin in the logo of Fuller's Brewery, which at one point owned the land on which the stadium was built.
