The English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) (earlier CIEFL) is a central university based in India. It is a national university of higher education. Its main campus is located in Hyderabad. It also operates campuses at Lucknow and Shillong.
The EFLU provides for the study of English and foreign languages and their literatures, organisation of research, training of teachers, production of teaching materials, and extension services, to help improve the standards of the teaching of English and Foreign Languages in India. It is the only University in India catering exclusively to the teaching/learning Foreign Languages.
Over the years, EFLU has been introducing various foreign languages that are in demand. It currently offers academic programmes in English, Arabic, French, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish.
The EFLU was also one among the first institutes in the country to start a cultural studies course with an M.A in that subject. The EFLU offers M.Phil and Ph.D. in this area which blurs the disciplinary lines between Sociology, Film Studies, Anthropology, History, Literature etc. In 2006, a decision was passed by the parliament of India to accord it Central University status. [1] The University has been renamed as the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) on August 3, 2007 with Abhai Maurya of the Department of Slavic Studies, University of Delhi, as its first Vice-Chancellor.[2]
