Engelmann Field

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Engelmann Field is a soccer field located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on the campus of UW-Milwaukee. It is home to the UW-Milwaukee Panthers men's and women's soccer teams, both of which compete in the Horizon League of the NCAA's Division I. Engelmann Field is home to the longest-running in-season tournament in NCAA Division I men's soccer, the Panther Invitational. The tournament enters its 34th year in 2007. [1]

Built in 1973 the 2,000-capacity field is tucked between buildings in the middle of the campus, giving it a unique feeling among American sports venues. The stadium is constantly being renovated and fitted with new features as Milwaukee attempts to make it the nation's premier NCAA college soccer venue. One of the final phases came with the installation of a state-of-the-art lighting system, completed just in time for the start of the 2006 soccer season. [2] In the first ever men's soccer match to be played under the lights at Engelmann Field, Milwaukee defeated city rival Marquette University in thrilling come-from-behind fashion, scoring three consecutive goals in the second half to win 3-2. The dramatic victory over the Golden Eagles moved the overall series record to 25-7-2 in favor of Milwaukee. The sellout, standing-room only crowd of 3,256 broke the previous Milwaukee attendance record by over 1,000. [3]

Due to Engelmann Field's placement between campus buildings, as well as its spectator placement right along the edge of the field on all sides, the venue has become known as one of the most intimidating places to play in the nation. The Milwaukee men owned one of the best home records in all of college soccer from the 2001 through 2005 seasons, going 45-6-2 overall at Engelmann in five seasons, including 13-1 in post-season play and 2-0 in NCAA Tournament play.
