[edit] Plot summary
9000 years ago an alien society in the Alpha Centauri system was under threat of cosmic bombardment. Their only hope to survive was to go out and explore (and eventually colonise) nearby space. On 21st century Earth, astronauts find artifacts left by this civilisation and wonder who they were.
The narrator is an astronaut who is on her way to the Alpha Centauri system. She needs something on her hands during the long trip, and spends her time writing several biographies. Two of the biographies cover humans who were instrumental in the discovery of the alien artifacts, and two of the biographies cover the lives of the aliens who came to the Sol system 9000 years ago.
