En garde is a French phrase meaning 'on guard'. Used to warn a fencer to assume the position preparatory to a duel.
In English-speaking popular culture, it is particularly associated with the sport of fencing, and with a largely imagined pre-Revolutionary France along the lines of the Three Musketeers.[citation needed]
