Empress of Mijak (known as Empress in North America and the United Kingdom) is the first novel in the Godspeaker series by Karen Miller.

Hekat is the daughter of a poor mother and father. Her father is hates her and beats her mother for not giving him another son. When her father gets the chance to sell her he takes it. For a bag of coins she is sold to the man Abajai and his friend Yagji. When asked her name she gives it as Hekat which she derived from being called a Hell-Cat. The traders have many slaves who are chained and naked but on like the others, much to Yagji's displeasure, Abajai takes her under his wing and begins to teacher how to speak. She is taught of the world and some of its history. She learns that there are seven territories in Mijak and that each is ruled by a warlord. She also meets godspeakers who are people who converse with the god of Mijak.
