[edit] Special Effects
As with most Bert I. Gordon films, the titular menace is mostly shown to us through photographically enlarged footage of actual ants. This did lead to some problems though, as the Ants' size would change in some scenes.
When it called for the actors to really interact with the ants in some scenes, large mock-up ant props were used.

- Filmed before Collins hit the big time in Dynasty, Collins reportedly said this was her worst ever acting experience.
- The quote "I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords" is often erroneously attributed to this movie. The actual origin of the quote is from the Simpsons episode "Deep Space Homer".
- The PC game "Empire of the Ants" is not based on this film or the story, but on an unrelated book by Bernard Werber, Les Fourmis.
