Empas (hangul:엠파스, kana:エムパス) is one of the most popular total internet search tools and web portal sites in South Korea. The Jisik Baljeonso (지식발전소) was established in 1998, and changed its name to Empas Corporation in 2004. The name Empas is a combination of e-media and compass. Empas is Korea's national web search engine, and is in direct competition with Yahoo! Korea, Daum, Cyworld, and Naver.
Aiming to check its main competition Naver's rapid expansion, SK Communications, which owns the Korea's popular social networking Website Cyworld, acquired Empas on October 19th, 2006.
