[edit] Introduction
Dr. Emily Stowe Public School is an elementary school in Courtice, Ontario, Canada. It was built in 1990 and is situated south of Highway 2 on Sandringham Drive. The school consists of students from JK - Grade 8. The school has a reputation as being a good place for children to go to, because the students excel at both academics and athletics, as can be seen by the numerous awards around the school and gym. It is named for Emily Stowe, the first woman to practice medicine in Canada and the founder of Canada's first organization seeking the vote for women.
[edit] Mascot
The school, also known as 'Stowe', is home to the Emily Stowe Elephants; named after an elephant that once existed at the Bowmanville Zoo. In more recent times, the Intermediate students have adopted the mascot 'Stowe Coyotes' (2003), while the Juniors have kept the tradition as Elephants. The students are proud of being elephants, as this mighty animal can 'stomp' on any other school's mascots.
[edit] Recess
Recess, or as they are called now 'Nutrition Breaks' (which take place at odd times throughout the day), takes place in the field behind the school. Unlike old policies, where the primary students could not pass the line in the middle of the yard that separates them from the juniors, students are able to run free and wild (as of approximately 1999). There is one playground, with a large red tube slide. There were two until an older playground was disassembled (ripped down) in approximately 2000-2001 due to a high injury rate. The field also has a 'Naturalized Area", which the students are unable to enter. The Intermediates spend their recesses in Stuart Park, adjacent to the school. The park has a large baseball diamond, a basketball court, and tennis courts. There is an additional playground, however the students are unable to use it. Track and Field takes place in the park.
