Emilio Chiovenda

Emilio Chiovenda (Rome, May 18, 1871 - Bologna, February 19, 1941) was an Italian botanist.[1] A collector of specimens between the years 1893 and 1909 in Italy, Eritrea and Ethiopia.[2]

In Rome he studied Natural Sciences and devoted himself to the study of the flora of Italy and of Eritrea and Somalia of the Ruwenzori Range and other regions of the African continent.[3]

His research on the flora African flora culminated with numerous publications and also a collaboration with R. Pirotta for the Flora of Cologne Eritrea (1903 et seq.). He also studied the many uses of indigenous plant species in agriculture, industry and medicine.[3]

During the period spent in Catania as the director of Orto Botanico dell'Università di Catania, he became interested in the local flora which lead to publishing a note on some plants of Sicily, and the beginning of a review of the Erbario Tornabene (named after the founder, Benedictine Francis Tornabene Roccaforteas[4]) is indicated by some handwritten notes attached to the herbarium sheets.[3]

In Bologna there are about 20,000 samples belonging to his great herbarium; they reference especially his exploration of the Piedmont (his homeland), but also many specimens collected in Lazio and Sicily.[5]
