Saint Emilianus, also known as Aemilianus, Aemilian, Millán of la Cogolla or de la Gogolla, Emiliano, and Emilian of Cucullatus, is a Spanish saint.
He was a shepherd in La Rioja when he became a hermit at age 20. He spent the next 40 years in solitude as a hermit in the mountains around Burgos when he was ordained by Didymus the Bishop of Tarazona.
He became a parish priest at Berceo. The stories of his life say he was forced to leave that job because of his excessive charity. He resumed his eremitical life with several disciples.
The mountain hermitage he occupied near Burgos became the site of the monastery of San Millán de Suso ("above"), later superseded by the Benedictine monastery of San Millán de Yuso ("down") in the valley. Both monasteries are known as San Millán de la Cogolla.
He is a patron saint of Spain, where he is known as San Millan de la Cogolla, the cowled Saint Emilian.
Emilianus is represented as a monk on horseback fighting the Moors, similar to the representation of Saint James the Moor-slayer, and sometimes as a Benedictine on horseback with a banner and sword.
