Perhaps a little further reduction is needed for first-generation, second-generation, etc. But where would the splits go? slambo 02:02, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)

I think similar locomotives should in general be removed from this. Of course the redirects would remain, but I don't think an abbreviated list like this should contain them. I've largely removed B units, for instance -- I don't think any of them (except the DD35) deserve independent mention. Should we list spartan and comfort cab versions separately? I am inclined to not. —Morven 01:41, Feb 2, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Where to split

In case you haven't noticed, this template is currently listed on WP:TFD. The voting is in favor of keeping the template, but it's resurrected the thoughts of reducing the template's size. One possibility is to split out the template into one template for each of the major classifications mentioned in this template (i.e. {{EMD switchers}}, {{EMD four axle road power}}, {{EMD six axle road power}}, etc.). Since the template already separates the links into these groups, a template division along these lines would seem logical. Thoughts? slambo 16:02, Jun 1, 2005 (UTC)

It is a bit ungainly as it is, i think it should be split. --ZekeMacNeil 18:39, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hearing no other comments, I'm going to create smaller nav boxes as described above. slambo 10:56, Jun 6, 2005 (UTC)

There are now five smaller templates to go on each of the locomotive-specific articles: {{EMD switchers}}, {{EMD GPs}}, {{EMD SDs}}, {{EMD cab and cowl}} and {{EMD misc}}. These are all pictured on Wikipedia:WikiProject Trains/Article templates, and I've already gone through and updated the locomotive articles. I think this template, however, is still appropriate on the General Motors Electro-Motive Division page as that page describes the manufacturer over its entire history (so far). Now, that should cut down on the red links' prevalence on Most Wanted. slambo 15:08, Jun 6, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Stubbed some more from the template

I just took a quick run through my copy of Pinkepank's book stubbing out various SW, GP and SD models. Anyone else want to jump in on the others to get them off the Most Wanted list? slambo 03:06, Jun 4, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] TFD

This template was nominated for deletion, but did not have consensus to delete. Thus it is kept. See Wikipedia:Templates for deletion/Log/Not deleted/June 2005. However, given its sheer size it may be worth considering to split it or convert it to a list. Radiant_* 09:55, Jun 6, 2005 (UTC)
