[edit] History

The school's history goes back to the early 1960s, when it was founded by way of a donation from the Catherine Needham Foundation, a local charitable trust set up in memory of Lady Catherine Needham.

The school was originally called Needham's Grammar School, and when first opened, it had approx. 790 pupils attending. It was renamed in the mid 1980s to City of Ely College, under the direction of the Head teacher, Mr Roger Daw.

[edit] Layout

The school is split into 5 buildings, each housing different areas of the school's curriculum:

Needham's Building - The original school building, which now houses the Mathematics, English, Design Technology and Modern Foreign Languages Units.

Downham Building - This is the newest area, housing History, Geography, and PSHE.

Bedford Block - The former home of the Ely High School for Girls until 1980, this is now the home to Physical Education, Science, ICT and the Main School Library.

Littleport Building - Home of the Business and Enterpise Unit,Art, Social Sciences, and Special Services who combine their own learning with that of the neighbouring Highfield Special School, whose pupils attend three times a week for mainstream integration.

The school also had a multi-million pound Sports Hall completed in 2004.

[edit] Current Management

The principal of the school since 2001 has been Mr Ian Gartshore. He currently manages the whole school, and oversaw the first phase of its integration as a Business and Enterprise College under the national Specialist schools programme. He is planning on leaving in 2008.
