Upon her parents insistence that show business was not for proper young ladies, Deutsch reluctantly left television and went to work for the Peruvian telephone company. After studying English, in 1973 at the age of 23, Deutsch boarded a plane travelling to the United States. Carrying with her a couple of hundred dollars borrowed from her siblings. Deutsch became increasingly interested in having her own fashion or jewelry business and with her husband Stefan's help, she opened Elsa Jewelry on Long Island, New York.
