Elphinstone Hall

Elphinstone Hall is part of King's College, Aberdeen at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland which replaced the Common Hall. It is named after Bishop William Elphinstone, the founder of the University.

Although it was built in 1931 by A Marshall Mackenzie, it was designed to be in keeping with the rest of the campus which dates back from 1495. The coats of arms on the cloisters belong to some of the benefactors and local bodies.

Adjoining Elphinstone Hall are the Linklater Rooms which is home to the 'Linklater Collection', a collection of 20th century paintings which was kindly donated by Eric Linklater's widow.

[edit] Purpose Today

It was initially used as an academic and exam venue but now it is also used for for conferences, functions and wedding receptions among other events. It is a focal point for the annual Word festival, a highly successful literary festival drawing famous authors such as Louis de Bernières, Ian Rankin and Adriana Trigiani.
