Elmer Wood Elementary School

Elmer Wood Elementary is a public school in the small town of Atwater, California. Students attend between Kindergarten and 6th grade. The school has about 560 pupils. It is the recipient of several awards including the 2000 California Distinguished School Award[1] and the Title One Academic Achievement Award.[2] The school year consists of approximately 180 days.

Elmer Wood has two sports teams. Track is available to all students in grades 1st through 6th, although students must attend a trial in order to be selected for the team. On the track team, all students compete against other schools in the city at the City of Atwater Elementary School Track and Field meet. A few students get to compete against other schools in the county at the Kiwanis Junior Olympics. Students who do exceptionally well at the Kiwanis Junior Olympics are invited to compete in the Valley Track and Field Championships in Clovis, California. Elmer Wood also has two basketball teams for students in the sixth grade. Students who make the team will compete against other schools in the district.

[edit] Clubs and Activities

There are three activities clubs for students to join. The K-Kids club is a kids version of the Kiwanis Club where students engage in various activities helping the school and community. There is also a drama club for 5th and 6th graders in which students rehearse and perform a play. Band is for 5th and 6th graders. Here students learn to play a brass, woodwind, or percussion instrument, and perform in various venues. In order to play in the junior high school band, students must have had experience in the elementary school band.
