[edit] Prospect Park (Brooklyn) NHRP Info Box

Nice box, but where did the 1917 build/founded date come from? Corrected it, based on the Brooklyn Eagle coverage of the park's first day of operation, Saturday, October 19, 1867. What did occur in Prospect Park in 1917 was the unveiling of the monument to La Fayette, May, 1917 (Covered in the Sunday Supplement to the NY Times, May 20 1917. Available at Library of Congress Search on "Prospect Park, Brooklyn"). This is at the 9th Street and Prospect Park West entrance to the park. Is that a source of confusion? Gosgood 10:04, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

I got your note, thank you for your quick reply, and thank you for the info box! 1865 was when Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted were engaged as architects, (February 4, 1865, to be insufferably exact). Vaux had been asked by the prime political mover behind the park, James S. T. Stranahan, to review and revise earlier plans that had been proposed and approved prior to the American Civil War, but were never enacted because of the impact of the war on the city manpower and budget. Once the revised plan was approved and Olmsted was engaged, work began in earnest in June 1866. It was opened to the public (still in a very incomplete state) in October, 1867, and was still being worked on in 1873, when the financial panic of 1873 sort of stopped everything for the next decade or so. During their seven year stewardship, Vaux tended to design the structures, while Olmsted managed the work force and sculpted the overall lay of the land, hence the notion that he is the 'founder' of American landscape architects. In light of that, I'd also like to add Olmsted to the list of park architects in the info box. If info box logic demands that it must be one, Vaux is the better choice, in my opinion, but there are Prospect Park fanatics who would dispute this. As for 1917, the year is not an especially significant for park architecture: the world war pretty much caused the NYC parks department to grind to a halt. The memorial to Lafayette was mainly politically significant. Henry Harteau, a French American and former City of Brooklyn park commissioner, had been a major fund raiser for the memorial, and in May 1917, British and French notables were in New York City to drum up American support for the war: a photo-op ensued. The next significant period of park reconstruction was when Robert Moses became New York City Park Commissioner in 1934. Moses was successful in getting a great deal of Works Progress Administration funding for playgrounds, band shells, and zoos, and "cleaning up" old stuff that was not old enough yet to be architecturally significant. Many of Calvert Vaux's best works were "cleaned up" out of existence in this era. I'm probably straying off topic now, so I'll end by saying, thanks again for the info box. That's a good question, I'm not really sure. If you search around for references, most of what you find on the film are reviews. Since movie reviews are usually people's opinions, I doubt that a FA reviewer would consider them legitimate references. I'll keep searching to see what I can find. [edit] Mountain Biking on Mount Tamalpais

Hello, An article that I created as a part of Wikiproject Cycling called Mountain Biking on Mount Tamalpais and linked to the Mount Tamalpais article, has been listed for deletion. If you are interested in the deletion discussion, please participate by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mountain Biking on Mount Tamalpais. Thank you, Bob in Las Vegas -  uriel8  (talk) 09:40, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks very much for commenting and showing your Mountain biking in British Columbia article. I put up the mountain biking information on the Mount Tamalpais article a couple of months ago. It took me about 5 years to learn a lot about that sport and the thrilling rides even an intermediate can take. I used to do it every other day when I was in Marin Co. and finally got a cool bike that let me push the limits even tho I'm older.
Looks like the votes are coming up now a lot for the branch article. To me it seems like a good use for a content fork out of Mt. Tam to an article that tells you what you want to know, i.e., "where do we go this afternoon to recreate on Mt. Tam, and experience the mountain as what it is, not a lump of rock?" Also, people can contribute to the detailed article. That should be on Wikipedia: if you just want 2 dry paragraphs about the flora and fauna you'd buy Britannica or Encarta. [edit] History of Minnesota

I have posted a proposed revision of the introduction to your excellent article at Talk:History_of_Minnesota#Introduction. I did it in an effort to address a few of the recent comments on the FA nomination. I have not (yet) changed the article itself; I wanted feedback before doing that. Kablammo 20:26, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

The article is shaping up nicely. Do you think a mention of the Red River trail would be useful? Before the railroads it was the route from the head of navigation on the Mississippi to western Canada. Surprisingly it is not mentioned in Wikipedia that I can find, except in Red River ox cart. Kablammo 03:29, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the note. I thought one area that could be mentioned more in the article was the state's historic role as a transportation center. The Twin Cities are the head of practical navigation on the Mississippi, and first the trail, and then the two railroads were the overland way to the Northwest. I don't think I'll do a separate article on the trail-- what little I know of it is in these messages. Kablammo 13:42, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the article-- it is both well-written and comprehensive. The trail was more important than I thought. If I ever get back to editing Transportation in Minnesota I'll use it. Most primary corridors have their origins in pioneer days and the trail seems to be one of the earliest, if not the earliest land routes. Kablammo 00:33, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Thank you for cleaning up my talk page.

Elkman, I am now finished with this article (famous last words). I see you have rated it as "Start class" and "Low importance"; I agree with the latter, but I think it is beyond "start" class now. As the contributor I'll leave the assessment to you and others.
An article on the St. Louis County portage would appropriate but there seems to be very little available on the web (except for a paragraph in a 700+ page .pdf from St. Louis County) so it may be a while before one is created. [edit] Cities

Elkman-- I saw your changes here. I think Minnesota cities are charted by the state, so they are not subdivisions of counties, even though they are within and geographically part of one or more counties. I'm not sure that makes a difference, or if cities in other states are established or chartered by the counties rather than the state. Kablammo 01:42, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Locating a landmark

Hello, Elkman. You seem to be the person most likely to know. Do you have any idea where to find Our Lady of Lourdes in a Web site that would establish that it is a National Historic Landmark? The Minnesota Historical Society lists it, but the federal databases that I checked don't find either First Universalist Church or the newer name. Nor does Wikipedia list show it. Could it be tied to the historic district? -Susanlesch 05:54, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

Hey folks. It appears this is what's known as a contributing property to the St. Anthony Falls Historic District. Essentially, it's one of the buildings in the district that makes it an historic district. Sometimes individual properties within a district are listed separately on the National Register, but most aren't. It always bugs me when I see a plaque on a building saying it's listed on the Register when it's actually part of a district. Believe me, I've seen it more than once. Anyhoo, hope this info helps. :) --Ebyabe 14:37, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
I think Ebyabe is right. The building itself isn't listed individually, so it must be a contributing property. (It's kind of a shame, because I think it could very easily qualify for National Register nomination on its own.) Here are a couple resources that could help:
I hope this helps. By the way, I'm planning to work on History of Minneapolis, Minnesota as my next project, so if you have any ideas as to what should be covered, let me know, or put them on the talk page of the article. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 15:26, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Thanks a lot, yes I think the Minneapolis Public Library history says the church was a landmark on its own in 1934 (and the Dept. of the Interior survey drawings at the LOC are dated 1934). As it stands the CP designation is enough to justify the NRHP infobox it deserves, thanks very much. Elkman, that is fantastically good news that the Minneapolis History article is in your hands. Yessir I will let you know if I run into any topics for it. Best wishes. -Susanlesch 20:00, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Books

Since you are rapidly becoming the MN history guy around here... Have any books that mention Camp Coldwater? Right now the intro says its the oldest settlement in MN, but it should really have a ref to make suhc a bold claim. -Ravedave 04:22, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] The Century

Per your question on DYK:

My guess is the same as your guess. It seems that The Majestic and The Century were both among the earliest Art Deco residential structures on Central Park West and probably because it was coming into style. The building at 55 Central Park West holds the actual title of "first Art Deco" building on the street, but it is nowhere near as large as the other two. If your interested in the topic I could use a hand filling out the red links on List of properties (Central Park West Historic District), which one day may actually be good enough to go for Featured List. You can also check out my recently compiled Central Park West Historic District, where any ideas and comments would be most helpful.

As a somewhat interesting aside, you may know that I do a lot of NRHP articles but usually for Illinois (with some dabbling here and there). I decided to beef up the article about my user namesake, Ivo Shandor and through it came to information about 55 Central Park West which I followed to its completion, linked above. My first thought was, hmmm, bet its a historic district (which is up for Good article btw). That's all for now, hope to see ya at Central Park West.

[edit] History of Minneapolis

Elkman, I think your article looks wonderful. And there's still room to add more, so no I don't think it is too verbose. A few facts are in mild disagreement with the Minneapolis article but not so much that I even took notes on them. Two questions I did write down.

  • Was Minnehaha Falls, Creek and Park named for Song of Hiawatha or the other way around?
  • For some reason rail service between Minneapolis and Chicago seemed significant (in the MPL history). It seemed to coincide with incorporation. But maybe it was not so important?

-Susanlesch 00:19, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

  • It looks good! I also think the level of detail is about right, but it's likely that the 20th and 21st century items will take up less space. Whenever an existing article covers the subject, let that article carry as much of the detail as possible. We ought to tackle History of Saint Paul, Minnesota too. --Appraiser 21:30, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] highway help

Can you figure out what to do with these pages? They were recently created, I personally think merging with 1-35 is the way to go, but I'm not sure Red_Bull_Highway_(Minnesota), Red_Bull_Highway_(Iowa) -Ravedave 03:34, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

  • Drive on the highways and let them give you wings? Maybe not. It looks like "Red Bull Highway" is a commemorative designation applied to I-35. Minnesota Statutes 161.14 establishes a number of commemorative designations, such as Olson Memorial Highway, Veterans Evergreen Memorial Highway, and many others. Sometimes, the commemorative designations span multiple numbered highway segments, like the Hiawatha Pioneer Trail and the Glacial Ridge Trail. (In the latter case, the statutory description looks like it's longer than the trail itself.) I'm not sure if we have a standard for listing commemorative designations that overlay state or interstate highways. I haven't checked out the highway projects in some time to see if there's a discussion about them. I don't see any real compelling reason to merge them with I-35 and US-34. In fact, I-35 outside of Minnesota isn't the Red Bull Highway, and US-34 outside of Iowa isn't the Red Bull Highway either, so a merge/redirect might imply a situation that isn't really true for the other states. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 05:44, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

I was wondering if you might be willing to help me out by providing a fresh and unaffiliated pair of eyes to the article National Register of Historic Places, current GA nom, as part of my attempt to bring it all the way from little stubby start class thing to FA. There have been some concerns raised on the current peer review page which could use some outside assistance. They include:

  • Thorough copy edit for grammar, typos and most importantly flow. (I fixed one mistake provided as an example on the review page)
  • The lead was confusing.
  • Look for minor POV, "Most important" other unnecessary descriptors
  • Get rid of redundancies, reviewer referenced this page: [[2]]

Thats about it. If you have any time to assist your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, feel free to chime in at the peer review as well. IvoShandor 04:28, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for helping fix the template. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio) 16:42, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
Someone else tried to add a needs-photo parameter. It is not working. I attempted to fix it but my attempt did not work. Can you fix it? TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio) 15:25, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
P.S. let me know if you can't so I can revert my changes, which I think are very close. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio) 15:37, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
When I go to Talk:Pat Ryan (executive) I do not see the Category:Chicago articles needing photographs TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio) 16:43, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
P.S. Hopefully, it will also show up in Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Illinois. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio) 17:07, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
P.P.S. I am noticing the comment section is annoying. It clutters the talk page template. Can it be deactivated? Can I use the Dab, Template, Cat classes with the template? TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio) 20:46, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
Great work. Thank you so much. Yes. Your interpretation is correct. I would, for example, like to be able to tag all the categories at Wikipedia:WikiProject Chicago/Categories or the templates at Category:Chicago templates with a class parameter. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio) 21:20, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
Category:Disambig-Class_Chicago_articles, Category:Category-Class Chicago articles and Category: Template-Class Chicago articles are all working with the parameters. I am having a minor problem with the Category:Disambig-Class_Chicago_articles getting them to put themselves in the proper categories though. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio) 17:26, 23 April 2007 (UTC)
I am wondering if a partial reactivation of Category:Chicago articles with comments is possible so that pages with comments still show up in this category, but so that the template does not show comments. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio) 23:49, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
I apologize if I was unclear. Having the comments show up on the talk page template is undesirable. Please revert this change. What I hope for is that the category Category:Chicago articles with comments can populate for pages with comments without the comments showing up on talk pages. This is so that we can easily figure out which pages have comments even though we don't want them showing up on talk pages. The problem with Category:Disambig-Class_Chicago_articles is that the Parent Disamb-Class has no other subcats or articles. I am trying to figure out if it is malnamed or something. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio) 16:12, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
A small link on the template is probably O.K. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio) 16:35, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
Great work. Any thoughts on Category:Disambig-Class_Chicago_articles. Should it be parented by Category:Dab-Class articles, Category:Disamb-Class articles, Category:Disambig-Class articles, or Category:Disambiguation-Class articles? Should it exist? TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio) 20:25, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
I have two further questions. What do you know about Needed-class articles? Is it possible to have an Image-class parameter value so that we can have an Image-class Chicago articles category. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio) 19:49, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

(Unindent) I don't have examples, but I can send you to {{Needed-Class}}. Does that help you to answer my question? WRT Image-class, is there any precedent that you might have scene elsewhere? TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio) 19:24, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Hope you don't mind...

Hi, thanks for tweaking my userpage. I have noticed certain AfD participants take issue with the strangest of things. Other people's opinions are like fruit, some are lovely and juicy and full of flavour, others are best left on the shelf and overlooked ;) Mallanox 02:44, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your comments on Selket's RfA

I am perplexed by your comments. I don't claim to be a GodKing, and in fact am quite clear about the fact that I am not even an administrator on the English Wikipedia, so that particular reference seems to me to be completely out of left field. A brief review of SnipingCriticism also leaves me perplexed. If you feel that my actions are "sniping", then why have you not followed the advice there? My comments are offered as, and intended as, constructive (if harsh) criticism. Quite frankly, I do not see my RfA voting patterns as meeting with the description there. Perhaps you can explain yourself more clearly. And as to your reference to CommunityExpectations, perhaps you can tell me which community expectation at Wikipedia you believe I am breaching. Making vague accusations, as you have done, without specifics, is really quite incivil, as it tarnishes another's character without providing useful advice on how to improve. I might even legitimately state that you were engaging in sniping criticism by your comments on the RfA. Perhaps you intended your comments reflexively, but if so, I would prefer that you find some other mirror.

I must also point out that I am not opposing all RfAs. In fact, I have voted neutral on as many as I have opposed, and I have even supported a few in recent days; for example, I supported Moralis, I made several comments in support of Matt Britt on his RfA, and I fully expect that I will be changing my vote on Sam Blacketer's RfA to support in the next day or so. I believe that my participation in RfA is wholly consistent with community standards. If you disagree, I suggest you make concrete, positive suggestions for change, and refrain entirely from useless and vaguely threatening accusations of misconduct.

  • Fine. Whatever. I retract the comment, and perhaps I should mind my own (expletive deleted) business. Go ahead and apply the punitive block -- or have one of your friends apply the punitive block. Obviously I should stick to something more useful, except I'm not sure if I do anything useful around here. Who in the hell gives a flying (expletive deleted) rat's ass about some old flour mill in Minneapolis? Maybe you can tell me. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 15:07, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
    • Also, I probably should shut the hell up about buildings in Chicago, since I don't live there. In fact, I've really annoyed a lot of people in Chicago (mostly from another online community I used to participate in). --Elkman (Elkspeak) 15:09, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] AN/I.

Cheer up Elkman. :) Don't worry about what happened on the RfA's. Kelly Martin left a message on my talk page, and also on Pascal.Tesson's, about our asking of her opposes. Acalamari 23:45, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Forest Preserve

I reverted your edits to Forest Preserve (New York) because that article is about the land-use category within New York State that exists within both the Adirondack and Catskill state parks. It seems you really want to be adding that info to Adirondack State Park (which I should get around to properly renaming to "Adirondack Park" as it isn't a state park per se and that's what state law uses) which already has a protected areas infobox, so just put {{Registered Historic Places}} at the bottom. [edit] North Star

Thank you so much! -> North Star Woolen Mill :). I was trying to find info on "North Star Blankets" and wasn't getting anywhere, knowing the right name for the building opened up all sorts of resources. I am going to try and polish the article a bit more then submit it for a DYK. I even got the sick idea of going to MNHS and looking at the docs they have, but I'll probably pass. -Ravedave 05:19, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Union Stock Yards GA

I believe the 3 citations by 1900 475 acres, The stockyard grew to occupy a square mile of land from 39th to 47th and from Halsted to Ashland. The stockyard saw its peak year in 1924 and then a gradual decline started. . . and At one time sprawling over 475 acres are not really at odds and are an example of historical reporting from various sources. I added one word for clarity to reduce any confusion. In summary, it was 475 acres in 1900 and it peaked in 1924 at over 475 and nearly a square mile. No contradiction. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio) 18:35, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] National Historic Site infobox

Hi Elkman. I find the infobox to be more unattractive than it is useful. Couldn't this same information be incorporated into the article, or photo caption, without this giant jangling intrusion? I find it really visualy harsh. Thank you for listening. Jim 15:49, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Chin up, Elkman!

Kelly's a little offensive, but you've been given the kid gloves as far as the wrath of her tongue's concerned. You've not been told you defile talk pages with your very presence, so you're one up on me.

Though Kelly's comments about supporting RFA candidates is not entirely without bias. She has supported a few recently, that's true. I think you'll find, however, that in most of those cases it has been after entering a decision of Neutral until someone pointed out new information to her.
