The author of this drawing is unknown, but it was passed down by Abel's descendants, and located by research of Bob Phillips. It was published in Newell G. Bringhurst (1979), "Elijah Abel and the Changing Status of Blacks within Mormonism", 12(2) Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought, p. 22.

WARNING - THIS IS NOT AN IMAGE OF ELIJAH ABEL. This is a 1939 sketch of a random African American in New Orleans by WPA artist Caroline Durieux, who still holds the copyright to this image (called "He Believes Everything"). It therefore appears here illegally. (See Lyle Saxon, "Gumbo Ya Ya", 1945, for a legal reproduction of Ms. Durieux' sketch.)

This image (or other media file) is in the public domain because its copyright has expired. This applies to the United States, Canada, the European Union and those countries with a copyright term of life of the author plus 70 years. Note that a few countries have copyright terms longer than 70 years: Mexico has 100 years, Colombia has 80 years, and Guatemala and Samoa have 75 years. This image may not be in the public domain in these countries, which moreover do not implement the rule of the shorter term.
