Elizabeth Warden (née Hawksworth) is a fictional character on the British situation comedy series Keeping Up Appearances. She is played by actress Josephine Tewson.
Elizabeth Warden is Hyacinth and Richard Bucket’s next door neighbour. She is often called Liz by other characters in the series. She has a husband working in Saudi Arabia and a daughter, Gail, at university.
Elizabeth is a caring and friendly character who is frequently invited round to the Buckets' for coffee. Aware of the snobbish and house-proud nature of Hyacinth Bucket, Elizabeth rapidly becomes neurotic about spilling coffee or breaking china, especially one of Hyacinth's Royal Doulton cups with the hand-painted periwinkles. As a result, even the most trivial of events such as Hyacinth raising her voice and the telephone ringing causes Elizabeth’s nerves to completely collapse; hence spilling the coffee or dropping china. Despite this, Elizabeth continues to visit due to being unable to say no to Hyancinth, 'It's like talking to a brick!' Hyacinth soon learns to offer her a beaker, but even then Elizabeth often blots her copybook. The coffee-spilling scenario was a popular long running segment of the series. The most spectacular scene involving the Royal Doulton is when Hyacinth manages a spectacular catch when Elizabeth flings one of the precious periwinkle cups into the air.
Unlike most, Liz feels moderately sorry for Hyacinth. She also displays a reluctance to treat her rudely like her brother Emmet often does. She is always the comforting ear of which Richard can express the reality of Hyacinth's snobbish endeavours to; either geared to lifting her up the social ladder or to avoid her lower-class relatives to prevent her falling down it. Although Hyacinth always tries to divert her lower-class clan away from Elizabeth like every other character, Hyacinth considers Liz to be a closer friend than most; hence when Hyacinth's status is on the brink of collapse, on occasions Liz will be dragged into her snobbish plans to help prevent such results.
Elizabeth is often the target of Hyacinth's tactless and unintentionally hurtful comments, mostly regarding her clothing, car and frequent coffee spillages.
