Elizabeth College is a senior secondary college located in Hobart, Tasmania.

[edit] Introduction
Elizabeth College is a public school of approximately 1200 students, run by the Tasmanian Department of Education. It caters to students in years 11 and 12, but there are also older enrollments.
As a school, it is a relaxed environment where students do not have to be on campus when they do not have a class and there is no school uniform.[citation needed]
[edit] Campus
Elizabeth College is situated near to the centre of Hobart, occupying most of the block between Elizabeth Street, Warwick Street, Murray Street and Tasma Street. The campus is composed of seven large buildings, along with a number of smaller buildings for other facilities. One of these is a school library and another is a gymnasium.
[edit] Subjects
Many subjects are taught at Elizabeth College. The curriculum of these subjects is maintained by the Tasmanian Department of Education. Courses can be categorised by level. From a college perspective, level 3 represents an elementary course for a given subject, level 4 represents a more advanced course and level 5 represents a pre-tertiary course.
Students are able to enroll in whichever subjects they desire. There is no minimum number of subjects to be taken, though students requesting financial support from the Government will require a full-time workload (five full-year courses).
[edit] Pre-Tertiary Subjects
A student can use the results from their pre-tertiary courses to qualify for tertiary level education, such as university. Students who want to attend university will have their tertiary entrance (TE) score taken by the sum of points gained from two pre-tertiary courses in year 11 and three in year 12.

There are many facilities available at the College. There is a large library, which doubles as a study area, a gymnasium and many computer laboratories. These are used extensively and are often required for coursework.
Extra facilities include a weights training room and Nangaree, the student services building. Several staff are based in Nangaree, including the chaplain, the security officer, counsellors, the college police officer and the college dog. There is also a large canteen and common room area, which services many students.
[edit] International Co-operation
Elizabeth College has ties across the world, including China and Japan. Every year, there is a school trip organised to both China and Japan.
Elizabeth College has a sister school in Hiroshima, Japan called Inokuchi Senior High. This is the main point contact in the Japan-bound trips, and the college also receives students from Hiroshima each year. In both countries, foreign students are placed into homestays to experience the local lifestyle.

Elizabeth College provides a number of different services and programmes for its students:

- Information technology which is integrated into all learning areas. Computer use helps to make our students independent learners.

- outstanding Library housing some 50 000 books and Tasmania’s largest collection of ESL and Aboriginal texts and resources.

- Advanced Academic Diploma - A program for motivated academic students that promotes excellence and maximises pre-tertiary student potential.
- Academic Competitions - The college has a record of excelling in a variety of academic areas including English, Science, Mathematics, Economics, Debating, Public Speaking competitions and academic prizes.
- Student Exchanges - These include student exchange visits with Hiroshima Inokuchi Senior High School in Japan. Sister school relationships also being developed with schools in China and Italy. Many international exchange students study at the college.
- Enrichment Programme - This provides over seventy co-curricular activities for students in a variety of sporting, community, cultural and personal interest areas.
- Athlete Development Programme - Athletes are extended in a variety of areas including soccer, basketball and volleyball.

The Athlete Development program was mired in serious controversy in 2006 when two of the pupils of teacher and prominent weightlifting coach Chris Chugg and were found guilty of taking an illegal substance and were subsequently banned from competition for two years[1]
