Sylvia Elisabeth Rodriguez (born March 5, 1995 in Buenos Aires, Argentina) immigrated to the United States when she was five years old. She arrived in Miami not speaking English but quickly learned in school, passing all five levels of the ESOL program in less than two years.[citation needed] Elisabeth and her family later moved to Orlando. She began riding at a local stable called Ledesma Equestrian Center where she learned the sport of showjumping.[citation needed]
She decided to use her gift for writing and reading to solve her problem.[1] On December 18, 2006, Elisabeth published a 136-page novel titled Jumping Jack.[2] The profits from this novel were to be used to help accomplish her dream of owning a horse and competing. Elisabeth appeared on many newspapers (both English and Spanish) in Florida including La Prensa, El Nuevo Dia, East Orlando Sun, East Orange Forum, and The Herald. She also had several book signings at Barnes & Noble and art festivals around Florida. Elisabeth appeared on CNN, Fox,[3] News 13,[4] and iWitness News.
Not too long after publishing Jumping Jack, Adrienne Provost of Gryphon Stables in northern Florida offered to give her a 10-year-old retired racehorse named Chandler on the condition that she could manage to handle such a spirited horse.[citation needed]
Elisabeth and her family were forced to leave Florida and leave Chandler behind.[citation needed] The family relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina where Elisabeth began middle school. She rode at a small farm nearby. The Rodriguez's bought a house with some land in Clayton, NC.
