Elias Kifle is known as one of the most vocal critics of the current government of Ethiopia. On top of expressing his strong views about his dissatisfaction with the government, as a member of Tegbar he has been organizing protest rallies and meetings around the world to speak out against the policies of the ruling party, the Tigray People's Liberation Front.

In 2007, Kifle, along with a few other Ethiopian journal editors, had been charged by the Ethiopian government of treason and in absentia and were sentenced to life in prison. According to government sources, extradition request has been filed with the U.S. Government to hand over Kifle to the Ethiopian authorities.
