Elgin is a city in Bastrop and Travis Counties in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 5,700 at the 2000 census. By 2005, the population grew to an estimated 8,689.[3] Also known as The Sausage Capital of Texas.[4]

Elgin is located at 30°20′55″N, 97°22′21″W (30.348527, -97.372384).[5] This is about 23 miles east of Austin and 17 miles north of Bastrop. Most of the city lies in Bastrop County, with only a small portion in Travis County.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.7 square miles (12.2 km²), all of it land.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 5,700 people, 1,869 households, and 1,349 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,214.0 people per square mile (468.3/km²). There were 2,032 housing units at an average density of 432.8/sq mi (166.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 67.37% White, 15.04% African American, 0.89% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 12.98% from other races, and 3.14% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 46.23% of the population.

There were 1,869 households out of which 36.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.8% were married couples living together, 14.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.8% were non-families. 22.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.98 and the average family size was 3.50.

In the city the population was spread out with 29.8% under the age of 18, 10.6% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 17.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 97.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $38,750, and the median income for a family was $48,125. Males had a median income of $31,368 versus $21,095 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,698. About 10.4% of families and 16.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 21.2% of those under age 18 and 21.7% of those age 65 or over.
