[edit] G'day!

Welcome!

Hello Elfalem, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you have any questions, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome!  fuddlemark (fuddle me!) 08:24, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] I want to know more about Copyrights

February 21

Hi, I wanted to contribute a lot more to wikipedia. My only porblem is I can't get the right information about copyrights. For example, if your library or other institution has a subscribtion to a database, is it considered violating copyright law to paraphrase and write the information on wikipedia?

If so, can you lead me to some sources on the web, where the content isn't copyrighted. Thanks for any help. Elfalem 03:25, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Your always best starting by writing about what you know. (And I would suggest actually starting with some copy-editing before adding content, then adding content to existing articles before starting new articles and always checking the "My contributions" to see how your changes have been accepted and if not why?) Remember that facts canonot be copyrighted (although some may be patented) but phrasing can. Paraphasing a single source will often be legal but will not necessarily NPOV or comprehensive enough to form good encyclopedic material. So use facts from multiple sources and use your own words, then you have no copyright worries. Rmhermen 03:56, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Dr. Rabb

Hello Elfalem, unfortunately Dr Rabb doesn't appear to meet the notability criteria necessary to warrant a Wikipedia article. Representing his region at the Boy Scout World Jamboree in Paris is not really notable enough. Please see Wikipedia:Notability (people) for information on what is considered suitable notability for inclusion. Hopefully that will help. --Cactus.man 20:00, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply. If his contributions to the field of ophthalmology are very important as you say, and this can be verified independantly citing sources, then he may warrant an article. Unfortunately the article you created made no assertion of why the subject was notable, which is why another user marked for speedy deletion under criteria A7 of the speedy deletion policy. I reviewed the content of the article as it was at that time and agreed, so deleted it. If you think his contributions are notable enough I would suggest working on a draft in your user space before posting it as an article. If you recreate the article as it was previously, it will be deleted again fairly swiftly as a recreation of deleted content and / or as being not notable enough. Let me know if you need any further help. --Cactus.man 20:26, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
Nice work so far. There should be a template for saying "I'm working on tihs; it's not a repost :)" Try to find a second source... +sj + 01:18, 12 April 2006 (UTC)
Second that, good work Elfalem! If you find articles that you are working on tagged for speedy deletion you can always add {{hangon}} and leave an explanation on the talk page. Admins will take note of this and not delete if there are valid reasons given. The best solution though is to get the article into reasonable shape before posting. There's also the {{inuse}} template which does half of what Sj mentions above. Keep up the good work. --Cactus.man 08:54, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:Wikiproject Ethiopia

I've never actually seen you edit Ethiopia-related articles, but I saw that you speak Amharic fluently, so I thought you might be interested in joining WikiProject Ethiopia, a project designed to ameliiorate and create articles related to Ethiopia. Hope to see you involved!

ዮም (Yom) | contribsTalk 04:28, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for that new template Cities of Ethiopia! I put it above in a different section, though, as it's different from an infobox, which is a box located to the (usually) right side of the page, up near the top with standardized information. For example, all countries have a country infobox for population figures, flags, GDP, etc. For an example, see {{Major French Cities}}. Thanks anyway, as the template will be useful for putting at the bottom of pages about Ethiopian Cities. — ዮም (Yom) | contribsTalk 05:45, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
We'll definitely need to talk about standardization, but feel free to make a start. It's not a controversial subject at all, so any objections would probably be minor. I'm planning on making a couple sub-groupings tomorrow to better focus the project (to discuss standards specifically for history, linguistic, and other articles — e.g. cities, regions, and provinces, cultural, etc.). It's fine if you misunderstood me, though, as your work was still useful. Glad to see you helping out! You might also want to check out the transliterations being proposed, which will probably be decided relatively soon. — ዮም (Yom) | contribsTalk 06:01, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
Cool. It's getting late where I am, so I'm off to bed. — ዮም (Yom) | contribsTalk 06:07, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
Good start so far. Perhaps we should have two templates. One for large cities, and one for smaller cities, with more information in the former. Regarding population, I can get some estimates for cities with 20,000+ inhabitants, I just have to remember the site name (it's this great site with data for cities of all countries). Images will be hard to come by, but if we find one, I'm sure that we could claim fair use. — ዮም (Yom) | contribsTalk 20:22, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
Check out Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ethiopia/Geography. We have population data and probably land area for almost every city in Ethiopia for free. We probably have a little more info than that, too, but to get in depth information, it's gonna cost us a lot of money. — ዮም (Yom) | contribsTalk 01:30, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

By the way. You should add {{WikiProject Ethiopia}} to the talk pages of new articles you create so that anyone seeing the talk page can easily find us and join and help out. — ዮም (Yom) | contribsTalk 00:24, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Admin question on Am:

User:Tatari on am: has asked to be made a መጋቢ and if it is okay with you I will proceed. We can then put any future candidacies up to a vote on the Admin project page. I haven't seen you around there much in a while, hope you will come back and be active! Tatari has contributed and even developed a js etc. for the site so I do think he can be admin. [edit] Welcome to Esperanza!

Welcome, Elfalem, to Esperanza! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is Stressbusters, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Proposals.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact Natalya by email or talk page. Consider introducing yourself at the Esperanza talk page! Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, you may find help at an IRC tutorial. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

[edit] November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
The last AC meeting (full log)
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.
Signed...

Hello! The Wikipedia:Graphic Lab is working on artwork related to Ethiopia, and we need some help to get the proper Amharic language text into the artwork. Please visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Graphic_Lab/Images_to_improve#Ethiopia_Scout_Association and see if you can help! Thanking you in advance, Chris 07:27, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi! Thanks for your input at the Graphics Lab! We still need to determine what the lower rounded scroll says in this badge Image:EthiopiaScoutbadge.jpg and what characters are used, so we know whether to add it to the revised emblem. Thank you so much! Chris 20:18, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
Thank you so much, that's great! One more thing, and sorry for bugging you. Can you render the words "Ethiopia Scout Association" into Amharic, and put them in the namespace at the article Ethiopia Scout Association? I really appreciate your help! Chris 20:48, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Ethiopian Olympic Committee

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Ethiopian Olympic Committee, and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://www.ethiolympic.org/Objective.asp. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. [edit] Netsanet Melese

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Netsanet Melese, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached.
