Electoral district of Belmont

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Belmont is an Electoral district of Western Australia. As in other districts, the Belmont district elects a single person to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. The elected person is then known as the Member for Belmont, and is said to hold the seat of Belmont. As of 1989, the Member for Belmont is Eric Ripper who holds the seat for the Labor Party by a margin of 10.8%. The seat in 2009 is expected to be retained by the Labor Party.

[edit] Profile

Belmont lies south of the Swan River and north-east of Orrong Road. In its centre lies Perth Airport and the Kewdale Freight Terminal. In the east it includes South Guilford and High Wycombe, though most of the electorate lies south of the Airport, including the suburbs of Rivervale, Belmont, Cloverdale, Redcliffe, Kewdale and Weishpool. The electorate's area is 65 km².

[edit] History

Belmont was created by the redistribution ahead of the 1989 election, having previously existed as an electorate between 1962 and 1974. In the interregnum, the local electorate was named Ascot, both electorate names commemorating Perth's local racecourses. Always a Labor Party seat, Belmont was one of the four seats held by Col Jamieson during his long career in state politics between 1953 and 1986.
