Elango is a common name in Tamil (A Language that is spoken widely in Tamil Nadu and southern parts of India, Sri Lanka, Singapore and Malaysia.) The meaning of the word can be arrived as given below.
Elango = "Elam" + "Go"/"Ko" (இளம் + கோ)
In Tamil "Elam" (adjectival form of இளமை) means young and "Go"/"Ko" (கோ) means king. Thus the name means "prince" The name has been widely used in Tamil Literature. One of the famous works in Tamil literature is known as Silapadikaram (சிலப்பதிகாரம்) and was written by ancient poet Elangovadigal/Elango Adigal, where Adigal (அடிகள்) is an honorrific suffix attached to people of great respect. There are three syllables in this word. i.e., E + Lung + Ko
- E (sounds similar to first syllable in the word Indoor) - lung (sounds similar to Lungs) - go (usually spelt with a strong K sound as in Court)
The same name is some times spelt in English with "I" as the fist letter. viz Ilango.
