According to the 1972 book mysteries from forgotten worlds, El Panecillo was manmade. "Within the last decade or so, however, it has become increasingly apparent, through study of its stratigraphy, or rather its lack of strata, that the Panecillo is not a mountain at all but some sort of enormous artificial mound built so long before the Incas that there is not even a legend concerning it."
