El Salto Climbing Area

El Salto (or El Salto de Ciánega de González) is a climbing area in the Mexican state of Nuevo León. It lies in the Ciénega de González, about two hours from Monterrey. It is the only climbing area in northern Mexico where overhanging limestone full of Tufas can be found. A 4x4 vehicle is needed to get in or can be reached by foot in about 20 mins (to las animas).

There are 3 main walls in El Salto for climbing:

1. La Boca

5 routes: 3 x 1 pitch (5.12's), 1 x 2 pitches (5.13d) and 1 x 4 pitches (5.13a)

2. Las Animas wall

23 routes all but two are single pitch. Grades from 5.11b to 5.14a (El Camino del Trollo 5.14a, FA. Cody Roth)

3. The Tecolote Cave

17 routes, all but one are single pitch. Grades from 5.10a (Culo de Merlin) to 5.14a (The H-Bomb 5.14a, FA. Steve Townshend) other hard routes include Chi 5.13d, and The Ralph Bomb 5.13c. The last route on the far right is Super Chongo, 2 pitches (5.11 and 5.13a), the 2nd pitch climbs the outer lip of the "upper cave" and is 5 star but rarely get's climbed.

(The guide in "The Whole Enchilada" is NOT up-to-date and has MANY errors including the map of Monterrey and names, grades and missing routes).
