[edit] Biography

Introduced to Spanish hip hop in 1985, he became interested in the graffiti movement that was unfolding in his neighborhoods, and taught himself how make his individual mark through graffiti. Later influenced by American hip hop artists Rakim, Kool G. and Kane, El Meswy taught himself to rap, and is today one of the most listened to artists throughout Spain.

El Meswy has publicly rejected the violence inherent to his music: “rap is like a sport, or so to say, the violence inherent in rap should not leave the microphone, because it’s a competition, you throw your lyrics out to show that you’re strong, that you have skill on the mike, but it should never pass from there. It’s a metaphor and should never transfer to the streets. It just shouldn’t.” [2]

El Meswy considers hip hop to be used as a platform for contact with others: “simply to be able to apply the knowledge in rap, which is a way of communication that we utilize as a place to speak to each other, as a newscast of the people, of the neighborhood, what is really happening and what they don’t show in the news.” [2]
