El Clásico
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
El clásico (English: The Classic), originally called El derbi español, is the name currently given to football matches between rivals Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. The clásico term came about in the mid-2000s, and is originally a name for any historical Argentine (or other South American) footballing rivalry. The new name came about due to the growing presence of Spanish football in the Americas, with the advent of global marketing of the game, and in America, thanks to widespread growth of football-only satellite channel GolTV. The rivalry comes about as Madrid and Barcelona are the two largest cities in Spain, as well as the two most successful and influential football clubs in the country. Real Madrid however is much more successful having won 9 UEFA Champions League Titles and 31 La Liga titles.

[edit] Rivalry culture
From the early days of football in Spain the two clubs were seen as representatives of the two rival regions, Castile and Catalonia, as well as the two cities themselves which have always been moving in different directions, partly through bloody-mindedness, partly through political allegiance, but mainly through clear cultural differences. This interesting phenomenon, in sporting terms also has implications that stray deeply into the country's sociology and politics.
Madrid is the seat of the government and of the royal family. It was built on and is sustained by the notion of 'pure Spanishness' and centralism - exemplified by Franco's obsessive opposition to Spain's multicultural identity. On the other hand, almost all the ideas that have shaped Spain's modern history - republicanism, federalism, anarchism, syndicalism and communism - have found their way into Spain by way of Catalonia. Fashions, whether in clothing, philosophy or art, have tended to take root in Barcelona before they gained greater acceptance in the Iberian peninsula.
During the dictatorships of Primo de Rivera and (especially) of Francisco Franco, all regional identities were openly suppressed (e.g. the peripheral languages were officially banned). FC Barcelona became more than a club (més que un club) for Catalonia because of its connection to democratic ideas. On the contrary, for most of the Catalans, and many other Spaniards as well, Real Madrid was regarded as the establishment club. However, during the Spanish Civil War itself, members of both clubs like Josep Sunyol and Rafael Sánchez Guerra, suffered at the hands of Franco supporters.
The rivalry was intensified during the 1950s when the clubs disputed the signing of Alfredo Di Stefano, who finally played for Real Madrid and became integral in the subsequent success achieved by the club. The 1960s saw the rivalry reach the European stage when they met twice at the European Cup, Real Madrid winning in 1960 and FC Barcelona winning in 1961. In 2000 the rivalry was reinforced following the controversial decision by Luís Figo to leave FC Barcelona and sign for Real Madrid. The two teams met again in the UEFA Champions League semi-final in 2002. Real Madrid, the eventual champion, won the clash dubbed by Spanish media as the Match of the Century.
Just about every football fan in Spain, however much they love their own club, has an in-built preference for one of the 'Big Two'. In some areas Real Madrid are warmly welcomed, in others, it's Barça. It might not be going too far to say that the strife and struggles between the two clubs onwards accurately mirror the very essence of the synchronous Spanish history.

Players such as Ricardo Zamora, Josep Samitier, Bernd Schuster, Michael Laudrup and Ronaldo have also played for both teams.[1] Michael Laudrup and Bernd Schuster are maybe the only players in history who are loved by the fans of both clubs.
