El Capitan High School (commonly known as El Cap) is a public, comprehensive secondary school located in Lakeside, California and serves students in grades nine through twelve. Opened in 1959, El Capitan is the fifth of twelve high schools to be constructed in the Grossmont Union High School District. ECHS is the home of the Vaqueros.
El Capitan High School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

Mission statement
- The staff and administration at El Capitan High School are committed to providing a positive and safe learning environment for all students. Since its opening in 1959, El Capitan has taken great pride in its accomplishments of rigorous academic achievements and extracurricular programs. El Capitan values not only high academic and behavioral standards, but encourages diverse perspective within a framework of respect. The staff will continue to build on past successes to create an educational environment where students can reach their full potential as individuals. It is the goal of the administration, with the support of an outstanding staff, to continue to work on improving relevant curricula, create programs which stress high levels of integrated skills and a mastery of technology, and expand a positive working relationship with our parents, community members, and local client schools.

[edit] El Capitan High School Marching Vaqueros
- The Vaquero Marching Band and Color Guard is the schools music program. Over the years the Marching Vaqueros have competed in marching competitions, band festivals, and parades all over the united states, including once in England. They have been led since the mid 80's by Roger W. Brown. During the marching band season, They perform in W.B.A. (Western Band Association)as well as SCSBOA (Southern California School Band And Orchestra Association), with performances from East County San Diego up to Orange County as far north as Riverside. Within the band, there is a Jazz/Stage band. Within the Color Guard, there is a Winter Guard performance team.
