[edit] History

El Alsson School was founded in 1982 instructing students the Egyptian national curriculum. In 1992, a section instructing students in the British curriculum was introduced and the program led El Alsson to become one of the first schools to offer a British section from Foundation Stage 1 (3 year olds) to GCSE, AS & A-Level (18 year olds). The school established an American Section K - 12 in 2004. The National section is still available at primary level, but most parents have now chosen International education.

[edit] Activities and traditions

The school is famed for its Annual Carnival which was attended by almost 15,000 people in 2006. In 2004, the annual International Day event was introduced.

The school has four teams for intramural competition like sports days, Trivias, and hardest workers in school. These groups are Karnak (blue), Memphis (green), Siwa (yellow), and Thebes (Red).

[edit] Curriculum

British Section: El Alsson offers three core GCSE subjects:

  • English/English Literature (Double Award)
  • Mathematics (Core)
  • Arabic/Religion Studies/Social Studies

Students then select five of the following options: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, French, ICT, Business Studies, Drama, Geography, Art, and History.

At AS the school offers a choice of up to 4 subjects chosen from English Literature, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, ICT, Geography, History, French, Business Studies and Economics. A2 (Year 13) is optional and is required only if a student wishes to complete a full A-level. However, students can only pursue 3 A2 subjects and usually do so by dropping 1 AS subject.

[edit] School Council

The El Alsson School Council is the official designated body to represent the student body at El Alsson. The Council is constituted of representatives from every class. From Year 11 onwards representatives are known as Executive Members and occupy a more senior position in the running of various organizations. The Council is not politically-aligned and does not involve itself in the day-to-day running of affairs of the school, but are active in organizing charity bake sales and events. Critics of the Council have fired that the Council raises funds for itself, citing ebezzelment, but representatives have repeatedly confirmed that surplus funds are always used for charitable purposes. The Council is headed by Dr. Mona Khattar. The Council is a branch of the school adminstration so it is not politically motivated and has no opposition The Council frequently endorses organizations and is a patron to several orphanages. In late 2007, Council representatives confirmed the rock band Smash Fiction as the official school band. As part of their duties, the band has performed at several functions organized by the Council.
