El-Mahalla El-Kubra (Arabic: المحلة الكبرى) is one of the largest cities in Egypt, located in the middle of the Nile Delta and is famous for its textile industry. Its population is estimated at 1,804,544 inhabitants (2004 statistics).
El-Mahalla el-Kubra is home to the largest public sector Egyptian textile company, the Misr Spinning and Weaving Company (Arabic:شركة مصر للغزل والنسيج) in Talaat Harb Street.
The city is also famous for its 2 football teams: Ghazl Al-Mehalla and Baladeyyet El-Mehalla. The former is one of the most prominent teams in Egypt. The team was established in 1932 by workers in the Misr Spinning and Weaving Company who used to play football outside of work. In 1973 the team won the Egyptian Premier League.
