Talk:Ekatarina Velika
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
the narrow definition of New Wave music includes the period of late 70s- early 80s and those 'neck-tie+suit bands' like Blondie, XTC, Elvis Costello and The Attractions etc. who were closely related to punk, ska, reggae, power pop etc. According to that Sarlo Akrobata were new wave, but EKV are not (maybe only in their very early period, but then they were Katarina II). for most of the ekv works the label post-punk or simply rock music (in its wider meaning) is more apropriate. their certauin tracks are even close to darkwave. let me know about your opinions.
- ps. maybe the Umbrella term alternative music is the best solution. it encompasess a variety of styles ranging from the Cure to Nirvana.

- ps ps. Im talking about the wikipedia definitions of whats: a) new wave b) post-punk c)new romantics d) darkwave and so on.
[edit] Labeling
It's ok to label it as a simply rock in wider sense. There is variety of influences here (as everywhere), so it could be labeled as at least 5 different genres. Rock is in itself a wide definition, and besides that Milan used to refer to himself as someone who "lives r'n'r", so there is no mistake.
To someone who is an editor - what happened with the size of the letters in Discography. Seems the change is irreversable. When previewing it's ok, but when finally edited it's small again. Can something be done, it's barely visible? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Mdream (talk • contribs) 13:07, 11 April 2007 (UTC).
yeah ok, but im trying to make a dystinction between whats New wave music (late 70s-early 80s) which was punk , ska and power pop-related and what are the derivates such as:
- new romantic - elistist arty pop aristocracy such as Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet
- synthpop
- post-punk and the related dark wave and the mystical gothic rock - dark intellectuals who were discusted by the previous poppy styles.
Regarding this I still stick to my claim that EKV were not new wave both musicaly and from the chronological point of view, they were formed in 1982, first album 1984, rose to prominence in mid-1980s. they are post- new wave and post-punk similar to very early U2, Simple Minds and Sisters of Mercy. They have nothing to do with Blondie, Devo or Costello. they are also not included in Sretno Djete rockumentary which includes Sarlo, Idoli, Orgazam and many others from Paket Aranzman and the Rokenroler tv show period. people should understand that not every influential yugoslav band was new wave band.Chajeshukarie 00:31, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Labeling II
At my point of view, they have nothing to do with U2, because if they did, I wouldn't be listening to them. They also basically have a little in common with Simple Minds. They however have much to do with XTC, who were a new wave band, and I found their sound had a new wave elements even at their later works. I'm not saying you're not right, because you obviously know what you're talking about, I'm just pointing that everyone hears differently. From what you have written as options , dark wave would probably be the closest term. But Dark wave has to do a lot with New wave, so there you go. The conclusion would be that they weren't new wave band, but the new wave influence always was very present in their sound, so it can't be ignored.Svenaj 08:07, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
- well ok, all of the Chajeshukarie's examples may have not been very precise, but I agree with him or her generaly. He or she refered to Sretno dijete (2003), a good rockumentary about the ex-yu new wave.it includes interviews with all the top artists: Azra, Film, Kazaliste, Haustor, Orgazam, Idoli, Sarlo, incl even the less known Patrola and Parlament, thus providing firsthand info. According to it, the yu new wave faded in 1982 (economy crisis, shortages, Kosovo 1981, idea crisis, global decline of the genre..). EKV, Disciplina and Partibrejkers were all formed around 1982 after the whole thing faded so they are not mentioned in the film at all. They are not included in any relevant ex-yu new wave compilation either. Though its true that Janjatovic labels EKV as "novi talas" in his book, which was obviously used as a source for this article, he also labeled some hardcore punk bands such as KBO! or Trula koalicija (cant remember which one) as postpunk which is ridiculous. he also labeled Sarlo as "late punk", what is late punk? Undoubtely a great music critic and journalist, his understanding of the development of rock music sometiomes seems outdated (like "every punk band after Sex Pistols is postpunk" or like putting new romantic, synthpop or postpunk acts into the new wave shelf). For all these reasons I do not consider EKV to be a new wave band. Dzole 21:02, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
