The Eizan Electric Railway (叡山電鉄 Eizan Dentetsu?) is a Japanese private railway company in Kyoto Prefecture which has two lines entirely in Sakyō-ku.

The company and the small network is called for short Eiden (叡電?), derived from the predecessor, Division of Eizan Electric Railway (叡山電鉄部 Eizan Dentetsu-bu?) of Keifuku Electric Railroad. The current company was founded in 1985 as a subsidiary of Keifuku. The purpose of reorganization was to overcome huge deficit of the Eiden lines which had been completely isolated from other rail network since abandonment of Kyoto City Tramway. The split-off was an urgent subject, though the completion of long awaited railway connection was to in near future. Keihan Electric Railway was then constructing a connecting railway Ōtō Line to Eiden terminal Demachiyanagi. Opening of Ōtō Line relieved the business of Eiden sharply. Later in [[2002], all shares of Keifuku was transferred to Keihan of Keifuku reason, to be a wholly subsidiary of Keihan.

[edit] Lines

Though the company is new, the first section was opened back in 1925, Demachiyanagi - present Yase-Hieizan-guchi, primarily to serve as a touristic line to Mount Hiei by Kyoto Electricity (京都電燈 Kyoto Dentō?), the predecessor of Keifuku in the sense of railway operator.

The Kurama Line was built by a jointly made company Kurama Electric Railway (鞍馬電気鉄道 Kurama Denki Tetsudō?) for an access to Kurama temple and Kibune shrine in northern hills of Kyoto from present Takaragaike down (up into the mountain) to Kurama. First section present Takaragaike - Ichihara was opened in 1928 and the following year extended to Kurama to complete present line.

The lines currently accept Surutto Kansai, but not PiTaPa.
