eircom League Weekly

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

eircom League Weekly was the name of a weekly football programme on TV3 in Ireland which ran from October 2002 to November 2007, which showed highlights from the FAI National League. The show was presented by Trevor Welch, who was regularly accompanied by analysts Paul Osam and Pat Fenlon. The show aired on Monday nights post 23:30, usually after the News Tonight bulletin.

Fans of the FAI National League expressed their disquiet at how late the programme was broadcast on a Monday night and that not all Premier league games were shown. On some Irish soccer websites, the program was rather humourously referred to as eircom League Weakly hinting at what fans saw as a sub-standard production. Teams were occasionally referred to by their wrong name on the show, e.g. United rather than Town, making fans question the knowledge of the so-called experts on Irish soccer. For the 2008 season, RTÉ gained the rights to show highlights and did so in their newer programme, Monday Night Soccer which is broadcast at the earlier time of 8 p.m. on RTÉ Two.
