Eiksund Bridge

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eiksund Bridge (Norwegian: Eiksundbrua) is a cantilever bridge in Ulstein municipality in Sunnmøre, and is joined to the Eiksund Tunnel which joines the south of Sunnmøre to the mainland, without the use of ferries. Eiksundbrua runs from Eiksund in Hareidlandet to the western island of Eika. The bridge is 405 metres long and 9.3 metres wide. It has 5 spans, of which the longest is 132 metres. The sailing space underneath is 20 metres across, with a maximum height of 16 metres.

The bridge was finished in 2005 but links with the Eiksund Tunnel were not able to be used until it opened in February 2008. Until then, only local traffic could use the bridge.

In February 2006 the union Maskinentreprenørenes Forbund stated that Eiksundbrua had been built too small, and was dangerous to use.
