Eidsberg is a municipality in the county of Østfold, Norway. The center of Eidsberg is the town of Mysen. Neighboring municipalities are Rakkestad, Askim, Skiptvet, Trøgstad and Marker in Østfold, and Aurskog-Høland in Akershus.
Eidsberg was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). The town of Mysen was separated from Eidsberg as a municipality of its own July 1, 1920 - but it was again merged with Eidsberg January 1, 1961.
One of Eidsberg's sister cities is Nässjö in Sweden.
[edit] The name
The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old farm Eidsberg (Norse Eiðsberg), since the first church was built here. The first element is the genitive case of eið n 'path around a waterfall', the last element is berg n 'mountain'.
Until 1847 the name was written "Edsberg".
[edit] Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1962). It shows the head of a bear.
