I just received your message. I am not sure if this is exactly what you mean, but the word "Amish" comes from the name of Jacob Amman, who was a Mennonite separatist who broke away from the church due to a disagreement over whether members who violated the church rules should be shunned, or kept away from the church meetings and their families, etc. He formed his own, stricter church, and we now call this the "Amish" church.
