Edwin McClellan

Edwin McClellan (1925- ) is a British academic and renowned translator of Japanese literature.

McClellan was born in Kobe, Japan, to a Japanese mother and a British father. In 1942, during World War II, McClellan returned to Britain and joined the Royal Air Force before being sent to Washington, D.C., as a liaison officer. He returned to the United Kingdom in 1948 to attend St Andrews University and then moved to the University of Chicago as a doctoral student. His doctoral dissertation, "An Introduction to Sōseki, a Japanese Novelist," was a study of the life of Natsume Sōseki (1867-1919) and some of his writings. This early work included a narrative of the novelist's background and an anlysis of his major novels.^[1]

McClellan became a member of the Chicago faculty in 1957. He went to Yale University in 1972 where he served as chairman of the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures from 1973-82 and from 1988-91. He was named Sterling Professor of Japanese Literature in 1999. The Sterling chair is the highest honor the University can bestow on a member of the faculty. The professorship is made possible by income from the 1918 endowment of $15-million from John W. Sterling (class of 1864); and it includes annual research funding.^[2]

McClellan served as director-at-large of the American Oriental Society and as a consultant for the National Endowment for the Humanities. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1977 and was honored with the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon in 1998.

His awards include the Kikuchi Kan Prize for literature in 1994; the Noma Literary Translation Prize in 1995; and the Association for Asian Studies Award for Distinguished Contributions to Asian Studies in 2005.

A festschrift was published in his honor by the University of Michigan Center for Japanese Studies.^[3] The 16 critical essays and selected modern period translations were compiled to demonstrate the high standards set by Professor McClellan.^[4] The contributors' work was intended to acknowledge the esteem McClellan earned as teacher and mentor.^[5]

The McClellan Visiting Fellowship in Japanese Studies at Yale was inaugurated in 2000 by the Council on East Asian Studies in honor of Edwin McClellan, who is now the Sterling Professor Emeritus of Japanese Literature.^[6]
