Edwards Number Eight

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Edwards Number Eight was a rock/alternative nightclub in Birmingham, UK. It is situated between New Street Station and The Mailbox.

Over the years it has hosted many famous bands such as Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against the Machine and the growing British band Power Quest who played one of the last gigs at the club before it burnt down.

It was destroyed by a fire in the early hours of November 12, 2006, whilst the club was open. The building was evacuated and there were no casualties, with only one member of staff being treated for smoke inhalation.[1] The building had recently received a new fire certificate.

There have been various fund-raising projects including T-shirt sales, requests for donations and a sponsored zombie walk through Birmingham town centre.

Following the fire a few temporary nights were arranged in a nearby pub in (and called) Gosta Green, but an alternative more permanent venue is now in the Newt Pub. This attracts many regular customers, and has become a friendly and lively venue.

The local BRMB radio ran a news item claiming that the club is to re-open in its old venue following extensive re-building work, however this has not been confirmed by the club's management.

The club's management has however stated that there will eventually be a new permanent venue, which will be able to host the club on more nights of the week.
