Edward M. Smith is an American labor leader from Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois, who now resides in Olive Branch, Illinois.

Edward M. Smith has served as Midwest Regional Manager of the Laborers' International Union of North America since 1994. He was elected a Vice President of the International Union in 1996 and serves on the International's General Executive Board. In 2001, Smith was appointed as Assistant to the General President for the International Union.

In 1981, Smith was appointed International Representative for the International Union and was later appointed LIUNA Legislative Director for the State of Illinois. Smith was elected President of the Southern Illinois Laborers' District Council in 1986 and Business Manager in 1990.

Smith is the former Chairman of the Illinois State Board of Investment, serves as a member of the Illinois Department of Labor Advisory Board, the Democratic National Committee, and is Chairman of the National Alliance for Fair Contracting.

In January 2007, Smith was appointed Executive Vice President of Union Labor Life Insurance Company (ULLICO), by the company's Board of Directors, while continuing his full-time duties with LIUNA.

Smith was the first member of the Laborers' International Union to graduate from the National Labor College with a Bachelors Degree. In 1978, Smith graduated from the Harvard University Trade Union Program.

Smith was a Delegate to the Democratic National Convention from Illinois, 2000, 2004. He is an at-large Superdelegate to the 2008 Democratic National Convention.
