Edward Grigg, 1st Baron Altrincham

Edward William Macleay Grigg, 1st Baron Altrincham, KCMG, KCVO, DSO, MC, PC (1879–1955) was a British colonial administrator and politician.
Born in Madras, he was a scholar at Winchester College and at New College, Oxford. He worked on the staff of The Times newspaper from 1903-5 and as head of colonial department from 1908-13.
In World War I he served in France with the Grenadier Guards and was awarded the Military Cross and Distinguished Service Order. He served as military secretary to the Prince of Wales from 1919–20. He reached the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.
He was a private secretary to David Lloyd George from 1920–2, and Liberal Member of Parliament for Oldham from 1922–25. He then served as secretary of the Rhodes Trust from 1923–5 and as Governor of Kenya from 1925–30. He returned to Parliament at a by-election in 1933, this time as Conservative member for Altrincham from 1933–45. During this time he served in government as Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Information from 1939–40, joint parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for War from 1940–42, and Minister Resident, Middle East from 1944–5.
He received many honours during his lifetime. He was awarded the CMG and CVO in 1919, and was promoted to KCVO in 1920. He was again promoted to KCMG in 1928, appointed a Privy Counsellor in 1944, and raised to the peerage as Baron Altrincham in 1945.
