From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Edward E. Whitacre, Jr. was chairman and chief executive officer of AT&T Inc., from 1990 to June 3, 2007.

Born in Ennis, Texas, Whitacre graduated with a B.S. in industrial engineering from Texas Tech University in 1964. He began his career with Southwestern Bell in 1963 as a facility engineer in Lubbock, Texas.

From 1982 to 1985, Whitacre headed Southwestern Bell's Kansas Division, leading the state division through the divestiture of the Bell System. He then moved to corporate headquarters where he served as group president, vice president-revenues and public affairs, and vice chairman and chief financial officer.

It was reported in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch by columnist Bill McClellan that Whitacre moved the headquarters of Southwestern Bell/SBC Corporation (now AT&T Inc.) from St. Louis to San Antonio after being blackballed from membership in a St. Louis County country club.
