[edit] Sam Houston School

It would be interesting to see some history of Sam Houston Elementary School on East Houston Street. I went there for 1st - 6th grade in 1971-76, and I still have fond memories of the place. I remember the nuclear fallout shelter signs in the basement, for instance. As a kid, I lived 3 houses down from the school, and told myself that I'd run to the school when/if The Bomb was dropped on Marshall.

A teacher told me it was built in 1901 - is that true?. Why was it painted PINK?! I haven't been around there in many years - what is happening with it now?

The building no longer houses Sam Houston, and has been abandonned and in disrepair for some time. Sports are still played on the grounds by the neighborhood kids though. -JCarriker 02:57, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
