[edit] Help make this a featured portal - DONE as of December 2006

What is a featured portal? Among other things, a featured portal "should be useful, attractive, ergonomical, and well-maintained:

  • Useful: A useful portal is one which covers a topic area which is both broad and of interest to users of Wikipedia...
  • Attractive: An attractive portal is one which displays Wikipedia content in an æsthetically pleasing manner...
  • Ergonomical: An ergonomical portal is a one which is coherently constructed, so as to display Wikipedia content in a logical and effective manner...
  • Well-maintained: A well-maintained portal is one which is updated regularly so that the portal can be utilised to display different aspects of Wikipedia content within a particular topic area..."

Feel free to be bold in updating this portal or nominating selected articles, pictures, and other content to help improve it and keep it fresh. Rfrisbietalk 02:45, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Self-education

There are portals and projects for schools and universities but nothing for self-directed learning. Since Wikipedia is an ideal resource and medium for this sort of learning, the lack of anything here seems a little odd. Have I missed it somewhere else? If not, the list of autodidacts and related category grouping might be a decent place to start. Then there are Wikibooks and Wikiversity which could also be drawn together under the same banner. Anyone fancy taking this up? 195.157.197.108 10:10, 19 October 2005 (UTC)

I agree emphatically. I have been disappointed what I have found at WP with regard to self-education resources. The knowledge is there. It just needs to be accessible from a different angle when it comes to this kind of learning. I have made the suggestion to start a WikiProject on the matter at WikiProject on Homeschooling, but think that a portal or inclusion on this portal would probably be more appropriate. Many of the resources for non-traditional learning are not encyclopedic by nature, therefore inappropriate for normal WP articles. But there should be access via WP to this invaluable information. I think that inclusion/development in the Education portal makes perfect sense.--Master Scott Hall 23:35, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Portal should include k-8 schools as a topic

K-8 schools are harldy mentioned in this article to spite the fact that up until the 1950's many schools were K-8 and most catholic schools are still k-8.

--Familyguyfan1990 23:58, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi Familyguyfan1990. Feel free to add something. You also might want to see how that would fit at Portal:Schools. Rfrisbietalk 05:00, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Featured portal tips

Please add any tips here on how this page can be improved to Featured portal status. Thanks. Rfrisbietalk 06:36, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Hmmm. The only thing I can think of is that it's very much focused on academic education. It might be interesting to have the selected articles branch out into subjects like musical education (eg Kodály Method), health education, sex education, etc. Just a thought. I'm willing to help out, if you think that's an OK idea. riana_dzasta 07:40, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
Sure, Education by subject is a major topic. One challenge I've had is finding a developed article (at least not a stub) with an image. Come join in the hunt! :-) Rfrisbietalk 14:46, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
Only real reservation is that the various other WikiProjects dealing with Education aren't listed (Alternative education, Education in Canada, Waldorf Project, and the others listed under WP:PROJDIR/H#Education.) Other than that, it looks fine to me. Badbilltucker 15:05, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
If you mean list all of them at Portal:Education/Wikiprojects, I'll make sure to include anything that's missing. Did you mean any other place too? Rfrisbietalk 16:45, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
