[edit] Speedy deletion of Edith (dancer)
A tag has been placed on Edith (dancer) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. ukexpat (talk) 13:46, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] February 2008
You should wait for others to write an article about subjects in which you are personally involved, as you did at Edith (dancer). This applies to articles about you, your achievements, your band, your business, your publications, your website, your relatives, and any other possible conflict of interest.
Creating an article about yourself is strongly discouraged. If you create such an article, it might be listed on articles for deletion. Deletion is not certain, but many feel strongly that you should not start articles about yourself. This is because independent creation encourages independent validation of both significance and verifiability. All edits to articles must conform to Wikipedia:No original research, Wikipedia:Neutral point of view, and Wikipedia:Verifiability.
If you are not "notable" under Wikipedia guidelines, creating an article about yourself may violate the policy that Wikipedia is not a personal webspace provider and would thus qualify for speedy deletion. If your achievements, etc., are verifiable and genuinely notable, and thus suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia, someone else will probably create an article about you sooner or later. (See Wikipedia:Wikipedians with articles.) Thank you. ukexpat (talk) 13:46, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Notability of Edith Su Ho
A tag has been placed on Edith Su Ho requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.
If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.
For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Accounting4Taste:talk 17:50, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

- Thanks for your note. I don't doubt that the program is recognized -- but I don't think it's notable according to Wikipedia's standards. What would be required is independent third-party expert reliable sources that assert the notability of the program, or you, in a verifiable way. Before you proceed, my recommendation is that you read WP:Your first article and WP:Why was my article deleted? -- it may save you some trouble in the future. If I can be of any assistance with interpreting Wikipedia policy, you can leave me another note. Accounting4Taste:talk 18:02, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

- Thanks for your note. The article you cited meets Wikipedia's guidelines because it is about a sports team that is competing at the highest amateur level and hence meets the notability guidelines for athletes. The individuals you want to create articles for, however, are another story. Unless they are notable in and of themselves (through having won a significant athletic award at the highest level of amateur competition, for instance), the only way to provide information about them would be as part of the article about the team. I hope this helps; again, if I can help you with interpreting Wikipedia policy, leave me another note. Accounting4Taste:talk 18:23, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

- Thanks for your note. I`m not sure why you would understand that the UC Irvine DanceSport page is worthy of a wiki when I suggested above that it wasn`t notable according to Wikipedia`s standards and the page has already been deleted for that reason (perhaps more than once). Go ahead and reinstate it -- it will be deleted again, for the same reasons, by another administrator, and you`ll be one step closer to being blocked from further contribution for repeated recreation of pages. Also, I think you`re the only one who believes that Edith (dancer) Edith Su Ho is worthy of an article here -- the article has been deleted for non-notability already, and being the founder of a non-notable institution certainly doesn`t lend any notability that I can see. Also, since the subject is yourself, you`re going to have problems, as noted above, with conflict of interest. If you`re sufficiently notable for an article here, someone else will probably want to write it for you, and biographical articles that are obviously written by their subject are scrutinized even more highly than others. Teresa Shiry is possibly sufficiently notable for an article here -- I say possibly because I`m not sufficiently familiar with the sport to assess whether she`s won a title at the highest possible level of amateur competition. It might be more reasonable to add her name to a list of champions in that particular discipline, which I assume already exists. PLEASE, before you continue, take my advice and read WP:Your first article, and please also consider carefully whether Wikipedia is the best venue for your promotional efforts. I`m going offline now, but if I can help further at a later point, you can leave me another note. Accounting4Taste:talk 18:49, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

- I'm not sure what else I have to offer you -- you think these topics are notable, and I don't, in company with the other editors who tagged them for speedy deletion and the administrators who deleted them. And, yes, second place is not as notable as first place; notability doesn't attach to people who come in second in an election, for instance. I believe, based on my knowledge of policy and my experience, that if you recreate these pages, they will be deleted again; you may want to roll the dice if you think differently. An examination of Wikipedia:Notability (people)#Athletes may help you decide. If you want to recreate these pages and take them through an articles for deletion process, I'll help you, but I have to say I don't recommend it; the opinions of the Wikipedia community at large will determine whether these articles remain or not, but if they are selected for deletion, they will be deleted pretty much once and for all, and I think they would be selected for deletion. If there's something further I can offer, you can leave me a note, but reiterating why you think these topics are notable will not be very useful. Accounting4Taste:talk 20:05, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
