[edit] Overview

The school was recently ranked by Newsweek as the #310 best high school in the nation, an improvement of over 250 spots in one year. This ranking puts them #2 in Tulsa and #4 in Oklahoma. In 2005, 92 percent of Edison seniors graduated. Edison has more than 30 clubs and organizations for the estimated 2,220 students enrolled. The school recently became a "Program of Choice" (replacing the former program called Magnet Schools). The school offers a wide variety of classes including several foreign languages (French, German, Latin, Russian, Spanish, Chinese). They also offer classes that range from TV Production to Leadership to Dance. The school opened in 1956 on a 44-acre lot on 41st Street in between Harvard and Lewis.

[edit] Music Program

The school has a high quality music program. The current instrumental music director is Joeseph Metzer. The jazz band was named the class state 4A champions last year. The Screamin' Eagles marching band plays uncommon music, such as The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, West Side Story. The band consists of roughly 70 members. It is lacking a flag corps and a pit. This is a limiting factor to the band at contest, yet they continue to do well.

[edit] Student Life

Edison has a very active student body. All students are encouraged to get involved in what ever they can. While many of the major athletic programs at the school have recently had losing streaks, school spirit could not be higher. Many of the school-wide activities and events at Edison are planned by the award-winning Student Council (08-09 officers: Carrie Clark-President, Katy Martin-Beal-Vice President, Nate Walker-Secretary, Greg Loeffler-Treasurer). Most famous is Edison Week, held each year in February, is a celebration of Thomas Edison's birthday. Edison has other clubs and organization that reach a far reach of interests. They include everything from five language clubs to a Graphic Novel club. Also active at the school is NHS (National Honor Society) and FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes).

[edit] Parent Involvement

Parents are one of the largest driving forces at Edison. There are two main parent groups: the PTSA and the Edison Foundation. The Edison PTSA (07-08 President: Stacy Loeffler) provides help to all areas of the school that are needed. They recently voted to spend several thousand dollars to help beautify Edison's large campus. Their largest fundraiser, the Spring Market, is an arts and crafts show held at the school each year in late April. The Edison Foundation (Chairwoman: Beverly Tolson) issues grants to those teachers that apply. They do this continually throughout the year. Their biggest fundraiser is the Eagles Roost Home Tour held each year in mid-February.
