Edinburgh University Boat Club (EUBC) is one of the oldest sports clubs within The University of Edinburgh. Originally started in 1867 it has been going strongly, competing at the highest levels ever since. The annual Edinburgh\Glasgow boat race first took place in 1877, ten years after the boat club started. One of the largest rowing clubs in Scotland it has over a hundred active members, with many crews competing at all levels. Training for novice crews occurs mainly on the Union Canal in Edinburgh, which although small, encourages technical rowing, and is used by international medallists, including Katherine Grainger (former EUBC rower) as well as senior crews during the week. Regular training also takes place at Strathclyde Park, Scotland's purpose built regatta lake, and at a training facility at Auchinstarry near Stirling. Land training takes place in the Pleasance Centre for Sport and Exercise, which has some of the best facilities available, including weights rooms and a circuit gym.
