EDGES with Mal Fletcher is a magazine-documentary TV series originating from London, looking at social issues and future research from a conservative or evangelical Christian worldview perspective [1]. Presented by broadcaster and author Mal Fletcher, each 30 minute film covers such issues as terrorism, euthanasia, pornography, genetics, robotics and alternative fuels. The series is produced by Next Wave International.

The producers claim they're aiming to present 'Christian worldview responses' on major issues, relating to an audience who would not watch 'church on TV' programs [2].

In 2006, according to the then head of the BBC's Religion and Ethics department, the programs were of high production quality but would never by easy to place on mainstream TV because they're "not pure documentary, nor pure religion, but a mix of both".[3] The views expressed obviously do not encompass the full range of possible Christian thought on issues and critics have argued that the shows try to slip Christian views in under the guise of current affairs. The producers argue that they're trying to redress a balance in terms of worldviews presented in mainstream media.

EDGES has aired on the Nine Network and Seven Network in Australia and SABC 1 in South Africa.[4] However, it is mainly seen on independent satellite and cable stations including Inspiration Network International, Premier.tv and The God Channel.

The series was one of the first in northern Europe to offer streamed versions of full shows via its website, from the late 90s onward.[5]

When the series began, the show was produced in Copenhagen, with the support of the Danish government's public service broadcasting remit. Today it is made in four nations, with the base of production in London. It is funded through donations, though no requests for funding are made in the programs.

[edit] Awards

In 2005, the EDGES programme 'Crime and Punishment' was awarded second prize, News and Documentary, in the People's Choice Awards at the U.S. National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) convention [6].
